My apologies for the delay in writings. It has, of course, been a busy week.
A few things the Baseball Winter Meetings have taught me:
1 - Business casual doesn't mean "khaki pants" or "dockers" - unless you are in high school. When these guys go business casual, that means "not a matching suit." Most of them had slacks and a sports coat on without a tie. Sometimes, wearing less made you underdressed.
2 - There are some hungry people out there looking to make money in a sport that doesn't pay too much. The job fair was a good experience, yes. Was it good to see all that competition? Not sure. Most of the jobs at those minor league levels had people that were willing to do whatever - which in those terms means work 65 hour work weeks for $10.50 an hour plus commissions. Not to say that is a bad thing, but I was really surprised about how little most of those teams did pay.
3 - It is very tough to tap into something if you don't have too many inside tracks. I did what I could to network everything. I'm not sure how successful I was initially. It is hard when the only team in oour immediate area is the Rough Riders..and the Cats (who weren't there because there is no MLB affilitation.) To sell internships to those outside of Dallas is a akward task. I did what I could, but would up going to the trade show to hook things up from that side.
4 - All in all - good experience!!! Had a blast!
Tomorrow...I'll post about the weather that has creeped in, and youth sport that happened in the process.
